Steve "Zulu Gremlin" Roybal
Born 8-4-70 in Los Angeles, California.
Of Spanish, French, and German descent.
I was born son of an Artist and a Musician and spent the majority of my life traveling from city to city experiencing the lifestyles of the East and West Coast alike. My father was into Rock-n-Roll, Jazz, and Funk. My mom was into Disco and Hustle. My house was always full of music and talent. As a child I was forced to dance with my mom at my father's performances. When I head a song I liked, I wanted to dance anyways so I fed the groove. When I saw Poppin and Lockin for the first time I was blown away. The "Lockers" were on TV in the late 70's and that changed everything for me. Robotin' and doing the "Backslide" were the must-learn moves for every kid.
When I saw "Breakin" or the more appropriate name "B-Boyin'", it hit me so hard that I had to move furniture and throw on a sweat suit so I could try to spin. This is 1981 now and I had been dancing for 3 years for fun but now it was a race to see who could learn more moves and do them more fresh than the next person. I started to compete nation-wide in 1982 and won my first trophy at a skating rink in the winter of '82. I started a crew with my partner called "Radio Active" after the song and began to battle and compete heavily. We traveled to and from the cities of Los Angeles, Denver, Miami, and New York.
We collected around a dozen trophy's and went on to do TV, Films, world-wide events, and even an Off-Broadway show called "Jam On The Groove" that was presented by Georgio Armani, Calvin Klein, Puma, and one of my early brands from the 90's.
I went on to landing contracts with Virgin Records in 91' under the name "Latin Alliance", QD3 Entertainment, Island Records, Polygram Latino, to name a few. I was a part of the first induction of Hip-Hop Culture in the Rock-n-Roll Hall Of Fame in 1999. Our Theatrical Dance Company called "Ghettoriginals" were inducted into the American Cultural Arts branch of Smithsonian Institute in 1994.
